Speed and Performance Surfshark VPN
When you decide to switch on a VPN (Virtual Private Network), you’re getting more security to your web navigation, by adding more machines and physical distance to your internet connection, that results in a more security but degraded performance, usually more slow.
To identify how much performance has degraded, I calculate the percentile changes that exist between machines that operate with an active VPN, and others that do not, using the Ookla Speedtest Tool. If you want to read more details about how we test differents VPNs, we invite you to visit our article on How We Test VPNs.
In each test, I have found that Surfshark (One of the VPN options available to use) increased latency by 166 percent over baseline, which is above (that is, worse than) the median result for this test. When I did the upload test, Surfshark performed remarkably poorly. The result was a decreas in upload speeds by 96.9 percent—the second-worst result I’ve recorded and far below the median score.
But, surprisingly, it wasn’t all bad, because this VPN reduced download speeds by only 84.4 percent, slightly better than the median result for this score.
For you to see how bad the Surfshark compare with the VPNs on the top of the market, you will find bellow a chart with the results of more than 30 diferent services we have tested, including the top ten performers.
Just keep in mind that each result came after using Surfshark at a particular time of the day, and in a particular location. I belive that your results of using this VPN would be diferrent, non the less, the method we use to evaluate each VPN allows me to make a solid comparison between services, while I have control over the variables -I made each evaluation at the same time of the day and in the same location, for example.
To this day, after doing a great number of testings, the results conclude that, for now, HidelPVPN is the fastest service in the market. That said, its very important for you to know that speed alone should never be the main concern when you are looking for a VPN to use.back to menu ↑
Surfshark Privacy and Logging
In this aspect, Surfshark’s privacy features start with all VPN basics, that are:
- Secure Protocols (OpenVPN, UDP, TCP, IKEv2)
- AES-256 encryption
- Prevent identity leaks if the conection ever fails
- A kill switch to block internet access at any time
An important fact: That’s just the beginning!
In addition to the list, the Surfshark service has its own private DNS on each server which allows it to reduce the chances of other people and internet users spying on your daily activities. It also offers you the ability to use a double VPN hop. For example, connect to Paris and then leave the Surfshark network in New York City. This makes it even more complicated for anyone to follow your footsteps on the internet.
Like ExpressVPN, one of the most popular VPNs amongst users, Surfshark is based in the British Virgin Islands, which are part of a volcanic archipelago in the Caribbean. Since its founding, the company has not used any requirements in its terms to keep logs of any user actions.
The FAQ area of his website, on the log in page, says this very clearly, stating that Surfshark doesn’t collect “incoming and outgoing IP addresses, browsing, downloading, or purchasing history, VPN servers you use, used bandwidth, session information, connection timestamps, or network traffic.”
Wondering what data the company keeps of you? Simple: Your e-mail addres and billing information. To keep you safe, that’s enough.
According to Surfshark, the company has passed a security audit made by the German Security Company Cure53. Non the less, this type of security examination is limited to evaluate the Surfshark’s browser extensions. What does this mean? That it can’t tell us any information about logging or other type of process. Still, Curse53 found in his audit only two small issues.
The German Security Company concluded that it was very satisfied to find out how strongh are the Surfshark VPN extensions, especially with the fact that is very common to find privacy issues in other VPNs.
Virtual Private Network Protocols
If we would like to create a VPN connection, there are many ways and options to do it. My favorite option is to use OpenVPN, wich has a earn reputation for amazing speed and reliability. More important: it’s an open-source option. This mean that OpenVPN is a code available to be examinaded to find holes with potential vulnerabilities.
There are many different ways to create a VPN connection. My preferred option is OpenVPN, which has a reputation for speed and reliability. More importantly, it’s an open-source option, meaning that, countrary to Surfshark, OpenVPN is a code available to be examined for potential vulnerabilities.
By default, Surfshark use the IKEv2 in all his apps. These is a really stong option because, in the case of OpenVPN, that is available for Android, Windows and Linux, you need to select it manually. According to what Surfshark is telling me, their iOS and MacOS apps will support OpenVPN very soon.back to menu ↑
When our team evaluate a VPN service, two important metrics to define if it is a good recomendation or no are the number of servers the company offers to his users, and the geographic distribution of each server. For Surfshark the result of both metrics is a thumb up.
Right now, Surfshark have a total of 800 servers. This number puts the company on the mid-range of the market. Why? Because the best competitors, like Nord VPN, maintains over 5.200 servers. In other examples, companies like Private Internet Access, CyberGhost, ExpressVPN and TorGuard have over 3.000 servers each one.
In the low-range, companies like Golden Frog VyprVPN has around 700 servers. Even more low its the number of ProtonVPN, with only 347 servers available to his users.
Even that 800 servers is a good number for Surfshark, keep always in mind that more servers doesn’t traslate in a better performance, because the number of servers in total its just one pice of the puzzle the company needs to make to provide a good service to his subscribers. If 800 servers its not enough for the total of users Surfshark have, its not going to provide a fast service.
The geographic distribution of the servers always matter, because a nearby server it will problably offer you a better service than one that is miles and miles away. When a company have servers around the globe, you are more likely to find one close to your current position, this provides a lot of good options if you are traveling or away from your normal location. Right now, Surfshark covers 53 countries with their 800 servers. When we compare this number with the competition, its a great result.
In this aspect, Surfshark is only surprased by NordVPN, that covers more than 62 countries (9 more that Surfshark), and ExpressVPN, the king that leads the tribe with 94 countries covered by their servers.
The range in wich Surfshark provides an above-average service goes even to South America, a region of the world that is common ignored by VPNs companies. Maybe they need to consider to expand the number of servers in Africa, where the company only have one. In the case of countris with repressive internet policies like China, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam, Surfshark have servers available to user of each of this countries.
A large number of VPNs options make use or a comonly called virtual server, with is a software-defined server. What does this mean? That a single hardware server could host an extend number of virtual server, just imagine a single PC with a great number of softwares.
This technology allows companies to quickly add servers to satisfy their demand, or to configure a server to appear in a country where the company can’t guarantee the safety of the hardware, that keeps in a safe place. Usually, I don’t have a problem with the use of virtual servers, but it is important that companies talk with transparencie about this subject with their users, because the people who pays for the service needs to know what servers are virtual, and what is the true location of each virtual server.
This is not a problem with Surfshark, because the company to this day only has physical servers in their fleet.back to menu ↑
Surfshark is Available on Different Platforms
Surfshark have a VPN service for Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows clients. The company also offers an app for FireTV. This is very wear to find in a VPN company, because most of the companies doesn’t offer this service. My personal recomendation is for you to use a VPN app wherever you can, since the apps give you access to all the features a regular VPN service provide (A service that you are paying) and take all the trouble out of trying to configure your connections.
In adittion, Surfshark have plug-ins for Chrome and Firefox. Please note that a VPN browser plug-in, like the ones for Chrome and Firefox, do spoof your location. However, they typically encrypt your internet traffic using TLS instead of a VPN protocol like OpenVPN.
Also, Surfshark ofeers their custom DNS resolver for Xbox and PlayStation. Unfortanely, doesn’t offer apps for each platform. Finnally, it alos offers instructions for his use on Linux, and to configure the router that you are going to use with Surfshark.
Full Access to Netflix
If you are tired of trying to use VPNs who doesn’t talk openly about their unblocking abilities, you will love that Surfshark talks very clear about this subject. Because the company not only say up-front that it unblocks Netflix, but it also names the 14 countriens where this option currently works, like the US, France, Japan, Italy, Australia and more.
I understand if you think this is just a marketing strategy, but let me tell you that, after our evaluation of Surfshark, we were available to use US Netflix from our five test locations.
For YouTube we didn’t feel surprised by the fact that Surfshark allowed us to browse US YouTube content, because this social media company use the most basic and simple of geographic protection. In the case of BBC iPlayer, it can sometimes be more of a challenge, but not for Surfshark, who bypassed their VPN blocking with any effort, giving us access from both of its UK locations.
Surfshark Will Block any Ads
Surfshark does offer an ad blocker as part of its VPN service. The CleanWeb feature blocks ads, trackers, and malware. Not only does this help protect your privacy, but it also saves network data and improves loading times.
We tested Surfshark with three different ad-filled websites, and the CleanWeb feature was able to block all of the ads that we encountered.
Use Surfshark for China
China is a nation with a high level of repression and censorship on the internet, thanks to the use of a surveillance system that improves every day. Checking the effectiveness of a VPN in that country is a sensitive issue, however, several collaborators have informed us that Surfhshark services do work in China.
Surfshark’s NoBorders feature is useful for bypassing censorship. It detects when you are connected to a restricted network or in a country with government censorship, and automatically redirects your traffic to access restricted content. Additionally, if you have a censorship problem that prevents the proper functioning of the VPN, you can contact Surfshark through its customer service center and they will help you solve the problem immediately.
Value For Money
Surfshark’s sales strategy consists of the same price for each of their three packages, where all premium features are included in each. The difference between each package? The amount of time for which you want to hire the service.
You have three options:
- 1 Month service
- 12 Month payment plan
- 24 Month payment plan
The most accessible, of course, are the last two, which will help you save a good amount of money.back to menu ↑
Surfshark Provides a Trial/Free Version?
Surfshark does not have a free version or a free trial, but you can still use the generous refund policy to try out the service.
Surfshark’s Refund Policy
Regardless of which of the three purchase options you choose, you have the possibility to request a refound of your money during the first 30 days of service.
Important: To receive all of your investment you must send a ticket requesting the refund. After fifteen days, you can only receive part or all of your investment if there is a problem with the service that Surfshark cannot solve.
If you need technical assistance to use Surfshark, you will find a wide variety of tutorials and content of interest on their official website, and in the FAQ section.
On the website you will find very basic information on how to operate Surfshark. If you need assistance with more technical problems, the company has a 24/7 customer service that will help you clear up any doubts. The speed of response depends on how complex the your connection or censorship problem. But don’t worry, you won’t have to wait a lifetime to receive an answer.back to menu ↑
After multiple tests, evaluations and comparison of results with other VPNs, are we going to recommend you the services of Surfshark? The answer is an absolute yes! Becuase If you’re looking for a fast, reliable, and secure VPN for streaming, torrenting, and protecting your privacy, Surfshark is an excellent option.
Its extensive the list of operating systems and device options where you can use this VPN exceeds the industry average, because in a short time, Surfshark has greatly expanded its list of possibilities. Also, the 800 servers the company ows right now helps you cover your needs in almost any part of the occidental world.
